Leaks in a differential typically come from worn or damaged seals, damaged gaskets, or improper mounting tightness. The way to prevent leaks is to address these points directly.

Check and replace seals such as the pinion seal and axle seals. Over time these seals wear and allow oil to seep out where the driveshaft or axles meet the differential. Replacing worn seals prevents fresh leaks and restores a proper oil barrier.

Inspect gaskets around the differential cover or any other gaskets in the housing. A damaged, cracked, or improperly seated gasket is a common source of seepage. If a gasket shows wear or deformation, replace it and ensure it seats evenly to create a clean, oil-tight seal.

Ensure the differential cover bolts are torqued to the manufacturer’s specification in the correct sequence. Too little torque can leave gaps for oil to leak; too much torque can warp the cover or crush the gasket, also causing leaks. Use the recommended gasket material or sealant as specified.

After replacing seals and gaskets, clean the area, refill to the proper oil level, and check for leaks during a brief test drive. Addressing these points directly prevents leaks rather than ignoring symptoms, replacing the entire unit, or taking irrelevant steps like adjusting tire pressure.
